Project sponsored by the German Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food: "Development of and proposals for selected methods for distinguishing between organic and conventional products"

As the market for organic products constantly grows, there is an increasing demand for analytical evidence of the declaration of organic origin. Since it is impossible to differentiate between organic and conventional products purely on the basis of visual and sensory properties, analytical evidence is assuming considerable importance for distinguishing between them. One of the possible ways for differentiating between organically and/or conventionally produced agricultural products are stable isotopes of nitrogen. These allow conclusions to be drawn regarding the organic status of products on the basis of the type of fertilization performed.

In a project funded by the German Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food, selected methods are being developed to differentiate between organic and conventional products and recommended applications are being compiled. TÜV Rheinland Agroisolab is one of the partners in this project, which started in early 2009, with responsibility for stable-isotope analysis. The initial findings were presented at the 2010 World Organic Trade Fair in Nuremberg.
